Standing at the entrance to the Graceland Wedding Chapel, Dita counted six grown-ups besides the happy couple. She discounted the sitter tending to the father of the bride and Marina’s eleven-year-old twin tornadoes checking if all the bouquets really were plastic.

Dita saluted olden Death who now went by the self-assumed name Dara. The fact that the olden Light wasn’t there meant Roxy had better things to do than give her protégé away. Which was fine, because Oz, the father of the bride was present, albeit wheeled around by a caretaker.

‘You said a small wedding. You’re Ellie’s brother, hence family. So is Oz, he’s the dad. Who is here from Victor’s side?’

‘I guess Vic only invited his BFF Gabriel and the family.’

‘Ah, that explains Marina and the twins. Convenient, having the new Goddess of Fate witness the marriage.’

‘And Luck as well,’ Hans nudged her. ‘And Dara. Olden Death couldn’t be helped, she’s Vic’s mentor.’

‘Yes, she’d never have forgiven him if he hadn’t invited her. Better be on her good side, just in case,’ Dita smirked. ‘Still, I fail to see the basis for this “intimate” selection? Function? Vic and Ellie are the new gods of Death and Light. Shouldn’t all the noob goddesses be here?’

Hans shook his head. ‘Vic and Ellie only wanted their nearest and dearest to attend. This means closest friends and selected family only.’

‘Yet I’m here,’ Dita said. ‘I’m neither a friend nor family to either. Am I expected to bless the marriage?’

‘You’re my nearest and dearest,’ Hans wiggled his eyebrows at her.

‘Yes, but it’s not your wedding,’ Dita parried.

Hans rolled his eyes and sighed. ‘You’re my plus one, DeeDee. You’re here because you’re my guest, and I wanted to be here with you. Have you never been to a human wedding before?’

‘Plenty. Usually, whole villages are invited. And Luck – to bless the marriage.’

‘In modern times?’ Hans gawped. ‘Didn’t Marina invite you to hers?’

Dita shrugged. ‘I assumed it was for good luck. It always is.’

Hans stared at her. ‘Wait a minute, you go to weddings to bless them and you don’t spend time with your fellow goddesses unless there is a project that requires your attention. Are you saying you hang out with your goddess friends and at parties only… functionally?’

Dita inclined her head. ‘Does the reproach I detect in your voice mean you think I’m going about it the wrong way or that you think I have no friends?’

Hans stared at her. ‘Friends are just friends, no functional interaction needed. If they are true friends.’ He dropped his head in his hands and groaned. ‘No wonder you don’t trust people to love you.’

It goes way beyond love and trust.

Hans raised his head, eyes pleading. ‘Look, isn’t there anyone besides me who enjoys your company simply for the joy of it? Or who you like spending time with because they are fun and easy to talk to?’

Dita shrugged. ‘Not particularly. You’re easy to talk to, but would I spend time with you voluntarily?’ Dita shrugged. ‘This,’ she gestured between them.
